The kinds of celebrant who can legally marry you in Ireland

Religious celebrants, non-religious celebrants, organised religion such as a Catholic priest, and why civil registrars are not on this list.

In Ireland, the person who marries you must be on the Register of Solemnisers. Solemniser is the legal word. Celebrant is the word most couples search. This site is a free way through that public list. The source file is published on gov.ie by the Department of Social Protection, as the Register of Solemnisers.

Start with a celebrant you can choose. You contact them yourself. You do not have to join their nominating body.

A religious celebrant will mention God. They are nominated by a faith or spiritual body, such as Entheos or OneSpirit. The ceremony can still be personal. It is not a parish wedding, and you do not have to be a member of that religion.

A non-religious celebrant will not mention God. They are nominated by humanist and other non-religious bodies. The marriage is still fully legal in Ireland.

Organised religion is a different path. Think of a Catholic priest, a Church of Ireland minister, or a Unitarian Church minister. You usually go through that parish or congregation. They assign someone. It is not a list you shop from, even though those names appear on the State register.

Civil registrars can also legally marry you. They are assigned through the HSE Civil Registration Service, so we do not publish their details here. You still give the HSE three months' notice, even if a celebrant marries you.

When you filter by province or county, you are filtering the address on the register. That is usually where the person lives. Ulster includes counties in the Republic and in Northern Ireland. If the address is in Northern Ireland, different marriage law applies.

Use this site to search by name, county or how long they have been licensed to marry. Then check the person against the current file on gov.ie before you pay a deposit. We reproduce the public register. We do not add bios, ratings or recommendations.
